Please release me,let me go.
Who controls John Gill?
Take the advice above and at least hold several types of pistols, preferably shooting them. When I bought my M&P 40, I went in intending to buy another pistol, but it just did not fit my hand comfortably.

Lowrance HDS 7" & 9" - Twin Talon 12' Anchors
My choice for home protection is a full size Springfield XD .45 ACP, first 5 rounds are hollow points

Take the advice and go try several different pistols. I have small hands with large thumb joints. Semi with smaller beaver tail just kills my thumb. Haven't found a semi with long enough tail to suit me.
Todays market of handguns they are all good. (Save a few of the cheap disposal models) take your time and find the weapon that fits your hand and feels natural to you.
If you have friends ask to handle theirs. There is not a single weapon that is right for everyone.
Take your time and do your research and get the best weapon that fits you and your needs.
Take time to also look at the Sig models. Very well built and dependable.

I am a beretta 92 man myself.
Beretta 92A1, add a light to it, buy a 20 round mag, and you'll be in business.
If I could only have 1 pistol it would be a Glock 19

Beretta 92 or M9 is a great hand gun. IT HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN. That is what I keep handy at home. But I have a lot of time with one in my hand and am confident with it. For my wife it is a revolver for reasons others have stated above.
Springfield Armory XD's are very nice! Never been a fan of Glock, but many people like them.
Best thing to do is go to gun store with ran and try them out.

Surprise nobody has mentioned the Smith and Wesson M&P line of pistols. You can get either with safety or without and they have the same grip angle of a 1911. I was a glock guy and sold all of them except 1 when I shot the compact version of the MP. Size of a glock 19 but for me easier to shoot. I do still have a glock 19 for the simple reason I think ever gun owner should have a glock 19 and it is was bought by my wife for a fathers day present the year my son was born.
