    SMALLMOUTH FISHERIES

Can anyone direct me in the right direction for the best smallmouth fishing in VA. I am trying to take my daughter fishing for her first time and wanted to get her on some nice bronze backs so any help would be highley appreciated.

I always went on the upper james, float trips. Especially for a kid, throw topwater all day long.

For good size and consistency go to south Holston in April/May. For a cool experience with the chance to really whack them (or be super tough) hit the new river

South Holston is a great place for smallmouth. And yes you can put your triton on it. It sits on the VA/TN boarder so you will need either a lake permit to go with your VA license or an out of state TN license to fish the entire lake.

I have to agree, South Holston in the spring is a blast.

Yeah, probably not putting your Triton in the upper james. At least the areas I was thinking.

Used to fish the Upper James, too...out of a canoe. Got a couple over 5 lbs. Top water, light tackle. Definitely not the place for regular glass bassboats.

James River, Monacan Park upstream of Lynchburg has a long no rocky stretch with smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass population. Even a chance for a musky. Start throwing flukes to the rip rap straight across from the ramp. Stay downstream of the power lines up river, no problem with boats. Bite been off this spring, high and muddy through what is usually the best fishing.
