I haven't heard this before. Will be installing mine sometime this week and I was planning on just tapping into my graph power which is wired direct.
I have power up front controlled by a main switch, would that be the better option?

A switch is not needed as the heading sensor shuts itself off when the trolling motor is turned off. However, when I install them I connect them to a power on/off switch if available.
