Thumbs Up ** Boating Law effective Sept 1, 2019 **

"Kali's Law" has been signed and put into law by Governor Abbott.
So happy her parents have been pushing to get this bill approved since her tragic accident in July 2012.
This will go into effective September 1, 2019 in Texas!

Now u get a ticket if the law shows up... or if u post the video online after the fact.

I guess this will apply to all PWCs too the way I read it.

Just common sense, I don't mind that being a law.

Back in my younger days when I was bullet proof, I never wore a jacket or anything.
Now that Im older I always wear my jacket and hook up the kill switch. I need my family and they need me.

From reading the replies here, I'm suspecting this means if your boat has a kill switch it must be operational AND USED. (Properly attached to a life preserver.) ??
I can't cipher the legal description of this that Reggie posted.

Tell me what it means, to me.

Cork I don’t believe you have to have it attached to a life preserver. I believe you could attach to your belt loop or wrap around your wrist, any means necessary to make it functional.

I have reached the old ass age where mine is always hooked up to my inflatable pfd which I always wear unless it is dead calm and I am fishing with a pardner. Old age sux but the gray brings wisdom!

I don't care whether or not someone wears their life jacket. Their safety, their choice. I would like see a reduction in the number of unmanned boats running in circles though. Going to be difficult to enforce, but I like the law.

I've always seen the kill switch as good for me and those around me. Especially the way I had been known to operate. Hate seeing new laws all the time but this one makes sense to me...

Amazing it took this long and unfortunate that it took a tragic accident to get things moving.

It says more than you must use the switch. It says you must test functionality. So it can’t be non-functional.

So true Charlie. When I mount the Black Max on my boat I'll be paying special attention to that. I've a couple commander shifters with ignition built in, what ever one I use, the kill switch much kill...

The story I read says she fell off the front deck of the boat and was run over by the boat. Not sure how a kill switch would have saved her. They should have made it illegal to ride on the front deck.

I would think that if you have a kill switch but it's not hooked up to you and you fall out of the boat, and the boat hurts someone, you would be open for litigation.

I always wear mine but the kill switch isn't the big problem. It's those tunnel hull bay boats just google the Dangers of Texas flats boats. They need to do more testing on the tunnel boats before they can sell them.
