Thumbs Up I got my first baitcaster today

Came home from my 24 hour shift to my lovely fiancé giving my birthday present! She did some research and bought me my first Abu Garcia Black Max baitcaster today! I’ve looked up some reviews and everything has been good for beginners! Now to go use it tonight!

Good luck. Start slow and easy at first.

Whoa, easy there fella... nobody needs to get hurt here. Lol, just kidding. Have fun learning this new tool, take your time and enjoy it. I’m sure once you master it you will find it a great addition to your weapons of bass destruction.

The next thing that happens is you go buy 20 more... At least you can blame it on the wife for starting this addition.

I got an Ambassadeur round baitcaster for Christmas about 35 years ago, I couldn't wait to try it out. I went down to the river the next day and tried casting it. If it had not been a gift I would have thrown it in the river. That was then, this is now. I've taught 8 year old kids how to use them successfully. Take your time, don't try to set a world record for distance.

I remember back when I got my first. Spent a lot of time out in the yard trying to hit targets before I wasted my valuable " on the water" time.

I've had pretty decent luck with the black max. I have had mine for 3 years now and own 6 of them. They havent given me any trouble. I get the itch every once in a while to buy some faster spool speed ones but these keep on ticking.

I'll add that on mine I find if I set the free spool knob to each lure to slowly drop and the brakes to about 3/4 from max I rarely backlash. Obviously for more casting distance you can loosen it up as you get better or for flipping and pitching.

Go buy a casting plug, and try the electric tape trick to save you lots of headaches while learning...

try and use mono or a cheap braid on your first spool. Im completely self taught (with youtube of course), and I cant tell you how many spools of powerpro I went through starting out! lol

The tape trick dmc mentioned is a great idea for your first time!
When I got my first baitcaster, I started with a very tight spool, then practiced casting over and over loosening the spool a slight bit each time until I got my first backlash, then I tightened it a tad and kept it there. There is one thing I will share, how to untangle a backlash... this works REALLY well and has saved my ass many times on the water.
