    ? for Mr. Jones

My new to me boat has a MK Fortex on it first I ever had(always ran MG) do I have to turn off at foot pedal or at breaker in back or not have to turn off at all? On my Ranger there is a mastyer switch for run, charge, jump and off but I dont think that kills trolling motor . I did not get manuals for anything with this boat.

Im not Mr Jones but I will tell you to turn it off at the trolling motor breaker and it will kill all power to it. If you don't there will be constant power to the head. I don't know if its a good thing or a bad thing. I just flip the breaker when Im done fishing for the day. I don't think the master jump switch kills the power to it.

I kill it at the breaker. Mr. Jones explained to me that you can fry the board when charging without killing all power going to TM. Use to unplug at bow but now I am hardwired. I feel it is more reliable.

I cut my breaker switch to the trolling motor off in the bilge. Its a manual reset breaker (MinnKota MKR-19 Circuit Breaker 60A Waterproof) so I just push the button to cut it off. To turn it back on just push the breaker arm back down.

This. On your MG, flipping the switch on the pedal to the off position cuts power to the board. Not so on the Fortrex. The off position still allows power to the board, so you must disconnect either by unplugging or using a cut off. Just not sure how that switch on the Ranger works or if it cuts power while charging.

Does the same hold true for the Ultrex? Do I need to do more than just turn off the switch at the pedal before charging the TM batteries? Mine is wired into a plug. Do I need to unplug it before charging?

Did not know that. I’ve always used a Motorguide which apparently unpowers the head when the foot switch is turned off. I’m lucky I haven’t fried my Ultrex head in the last four weeks it’s been on there. What would cause the on-board charger to do that if the TM is protected by a fuse. Does the same hold true for Helix units wired directly to the cranking battery when charging it? Do they need to be isolated through an on/off switch, in addition to turning them off?
