1979 Mercury 800 Jet question on starter.

Buddy has a 1979 mercury 800 (80) 4cyl jet, no distributer, uses ignition pack (no serial we can find). He just picked up, it appears to have been sitting in a shop for some time, very clean for a 1979.

Got it all wired up and the when go to start the bendix when touches the flywheel starts electrical sparking.
Is this a problem with the starter??? The battery cables at the battery got very hot. I ohmed (with battery disconnected) out from the bendix and power positive and negative, had continuity and about 2 or 3 ohms measured. I am guessing internal short.

The engine has not been ran in 2years, any items to check before getting it running.

    Update: Found the problem!!!!

He had hooked the engine grounds to the starter 12volt input ,,thinking that was a ground lug. He blames it on the jumper from solenoid to started being black!!
