Question 2005 Rude 225HO Broken Bolt Head

    2005 Rude 225HO, MD# E225FHLSOB, SN# 05077553

Need some help from the "well-O-knowledge". I was changing my fuel filter this past Friday and a bolt head fell out of the lower pan.

    unnamed.jpg

I searched all over and found where I believe it came from. Right behind the (what I'm assuming to be) throttle stop linkage, looks like there is a bolt with the head sheared off.

(Why ^^this^^ pic chose to rotate I dunno)

I've searched my manual up and down trying to locate this bolt and the gold-ish part (188357) behind it to no avail. Can anybody tell me what this is and whether or not that bolt head would have even come from here? Hard to tell from the picture, but I can make out a bolt head on the last pic. No issues with the engine or anything, as it's been running like a champ for years. Also have no idea when this might have happened either.

    Thanks,

that looks like a dowel pin more than a broken head bolt to me? looks too smooth and rounded? i had a bolt pop like that and it was one holding the crank sensor down, top of motor slightly under flywheel?

You're probably right. It really looked like there was an outline of the bolt head though. Guess I'm going to have to keep searching for it.

I've had that happen before on 03 225 HO.....it was tricky getting that broken bolt out.....did manage by turning a 1/4 inch left hand drill slowly into the broken bolt and backed it out.....Replaced with a new bolt from BRP. The dowel pin Mac referred to is the round one above that hole....Those bolts are 1/4-20 SS bolts.

Thanks Michael. I've got some bolt extractors, but will have to drill a starter hole for it to grab. Do you know what that gold part is? I'm still curious as I can't find it on my diagrams anywhere.

Which pic? The third one shows a dowel pin just above the broken bolt hole.....

The 3rd one. Has the part number 188357 on it. Looks like the broken bolt goes thru it.

That is the two halves of the block.....the big bolts are at the main bearings, the smaller bolts help the block halves to seal the block. That is gel seal squeezed from the two halves.

The dowel pin is for lining up both halves of the crank case. As you see in picture #3 the bolts are flange bolts nothing broken in that picture. The bolt head in Pic #1 is not a flange bolt. What side of the block did you find the broken bolt head?

It fell out of the rear of the lower pan when I was loosening it up to remove the fuel filter.

did you check under flywheel for crank sensor bolt like I had break? might be diff on etec? I don't think that machined round spot is a bolt hole but not a boat motor tech either?

Look up around the blow off valve and the cover plate on the top rear of the block.

Well, nothing found. I spent about 20 minutes going all over it again and I can’t find a bolt missing a head
