    Towing 2 Trailers

Looking at buying a 5th wheel and towing my boat behind it. Checked here in AZ and not a problem since they measure to back of trailer and not motor on the boat. Looking for any advice or info before I jump into this.

Make sure you have sufficient amount of Tow Vehicle to not only PULL, but also STOP what you're towing. Check the GROSS VEHICLE TOWING WEIGHT !! Also, make sure you're not required to have a Class A license (I think it's like 25k# total) to pull in your state and any states you plan to go into.

Few factory 5th wheel trailer rear hitches can handle the weight of a big glass boat, so you may need a fabricated hitch. Fuel stops are a nightmare. I wouldn’t try it without a Diesel and extra tank in the bed so you could refuel when you were unhitched.

Checked on licensing and don’t need a class A until 26001 combined weight and as for my diesel fill ups thought if I stuck to truck stops much easier.

Length is your main concern. 65ft total length is the limit. You can easily exceed that with a small 5th wheel. 22ft for truck, 32 for 5er and another 20+ for the boat puts you way over.

Called several different states an got all different answers on length measurements. Some said only measure to trailer and some said to back of motor. Was also told why worry about it nobody checks lol, I would be the guy with the wrong officer that day.

Pretty sure the length measurement is from the front Bumper on the Truck to the rear Bumper on the last trailer (Boat). However, neather can exceed 28' in length. Here's more info

Not sure that is legal anywhere.

haha, in LA and MS where i do it there are no laws on bumper pull verses FW, only length and weight laws. admittedly i am over the length. but surprisingly to most it tows like a dream, i am well withing the ability's of my truck, have trailer brakes in both. just have to plan fuel stops cause backing up is out of the question.

Oh c’mon— by the way, length for a pick up, camper and boat vary from state to state. South Dakota allows a total length of 75’ with the second towed item not to be longer than 24’

Set of triples in states that allow them is 120’ overall

Yes, but TRIPLES are only allowed on "INTERSTATES' ! You'd have to find a lake that was no further than 1 mile of the highway, LOL !!

But doubles are allowed on two lanes. I ran miles and miles of two lanes. Two pups and a Day cab 78’-82’ depending on which tractor I was running.

Agreed, 1st towed unit has to be a kingpin fifthwheel style. I don't believe a ball style gooseneck is even legal to tow doubles with AND that varies by state. Used to build hitches for our oilfield trucks, could not buy them heavy enough. You would be surprised on the lack of specs for hitches. cj

Doesn't have to be a king pin or fifth wheel in Louisiana or Mississippi, only length and weight requirements
