And to think I'd been away for a while, then see this thread.

I too have been in need of a new pair of split ring pliers. Had a hook break last time out and the ones I have were all but useless! Took half an hour in the boat, with the sweat dripping, and waves rocking to change the darned hook. I knew then that I'd be buying another pair of pliers. Found a guy on YouTube that reviews the KVD vs the Texas Tackle. Night and day difference!

Haven't heard of the Xuron's… but that's great to see as well. Amazon here I come!

Agree with the Xuron recommendations. Always wondered why split ring pliers didn't work like they should, then finally found a pair that does. I'll never use anything else.

Like the Texas Tackle for bigger split rings. The Xuron pair I got has blue handles (if that helps). Still tricky, but works fine.

I have one pair of split ring pliers with orange handles, if those don't work I do the KVD method.

Thanks to this thread I ended up picking up a pair of Xuron along with the Texas Tackle. For the rings on most crankbaits (ie less than 20' runners).... Xuron wins HANDS DOWN! Had a couple smaller 1.5's and Shad Rap size ones that I needed to work on. The Xuron size, and sharp points made short work of it. The Texas Tackle's rounded nub and flatter pointed ends really didn't want to open the rings, much less maneuver the ring around and around to feed the eyes/hooks through it.

I am also in the group that believe the Xuron split ring pliers are better than the Texas Tackle split ring pliers.

Yes sir. Been doing it that way for years as I'm not even sure they had split ring pliers 30 years ago. I did buy some a year or two ago and I'll stick to my old way with the needle nose pliers and use the hook to remove. It's just like working a key ring.
