    Easter 5--Cantate--"Sing to the Lord"

    "Sing to the Lord, for He has done glorious things." Is 12:5

    Isaiah 12:1-6
    In that day you will say:“I will praise you, Lord.
    Although you were angry with me,
    your anger has turned away
    and you have comforted me.
    2 Surely God is my salvation;
    I will trust and not be afraid.
    The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense[a];
    he has become my salvation.”
    3 With joy you will draw water
    from the wells of salvation.

    4 In that day you will say:
    “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations what he has done,
    and proclaim that his name is exalted.
    5 Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;
    let this be known to all the world.
    6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
    for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

    V1. "In that day." What day? When Christ came to take away our sins--completely.

    V1. God is perfectly just. He cannot sweep sins under the rug or simply ignore them. Justice demands punishment. Christians have a God that is powerful enough, pure enough, and compassionate enough to solve our woes. He sent His crown jewel (Christ) to live a perfect life for us and to die (temporally and eternally) for us.

    v3. Gospel

    v4-5. Application--What do we do with this message?

    v6. "people of Zion"--the Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints.

    Where do perfect justice and perfect compassion intersect?---at the cross.

    Isaiah, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, talked about justice, punishment, and payment in v1 above. What is Isaiah alluding to? He gets to it in chapter 53:

    "Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
    yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
    5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
    the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed."

    He alludes to Christ.
