    Oil tank leakage?

Not sure if this is a Ranger forum issue or if I should do this on the Mercury forum.

I have a 2010 198VX with a 200 ProXS. I noticed a few weeks ago that I’m getting some oil splash on the underside of my rear hatch just above the oil reservoir. It’s also slightly wet with oil around the cap. There is some oil in the compartment that I assume has leaked from the tank or the cap. There aren’t any visible cracks in the tank and the caps seems tight. Seems particularly worse when the oil tank is full, not that bad with less than a fuel tank of oil. Everything seems okay with the engine, except for this pesky oil issue. It’s not a bunch of oil. I just use a rag and wipe it up.

Any thoughts? Thanks very much in advance.

You have a leak that needs to be found and fixed.

My tank used to leak (old 2 stroke) from the cap itself since there was no gasket and worse when full since more splashing in the tank. I added a gastket and that fixed it

I also had an oil leak and used to keep my tank full. I just stopped filling the tank all the way full and no more issues.

Having some air space in the tank is important, but the tank is pressurized from the motor to push oil up to the tank on the engine. If oil is leaking then air is also leaking and you need to fix it before it gets worse.

There is a gasket in the screw on top. The engine feed hoses sometimes leak at the fittings where they have tie wraps retaining the hoses on the fittings. I do have a complete Mercury tank, bracket, hoses, and remote oil fill deck fitting/hose that I will sell if you determine the tank has a leak. Came off my Optimax setup after I repowered to a V8.

Thanks very much for the responses. I’ll get this checked out. I’d rather be safe than sorry. Thanks again!

Had this issue too from filling the reservoir all the way to the top of the remote fill line. Just started watching the tank itself instead of the line and I stop when oils gets to the last mark near the top of the tank. No more leaks.

Check your cap gasket and the rubber hose ends also. The hoses will sometimes crack and just need to cut off an inch or two and re-attach.
