Yeah that was during the open wheel civil war and they really turned them up that year trying to prove a point, it ended up killing Scott Brayton the guy that had the pole that year. He was Tony Stewarts team mate back when he ran indycars before moving to nascar, lotta people don't realize this.

If you have never been to the 500, it’s absolutely amazing. Don’t expect to have a full view of the track, but when they come into your view it’s insane.

Boy it is but its happened before, I remember just a few years ago Andretti royally screwed up and some of their driver missed the show, I believe they bought out one of AJ Foyts cars so Hunter-Reay could put his sponsor DHL on it and run the race as a backmarker. I don't imagine Alonso has any interest in running around at the back, he did plenty of that the last several years in F1
