Can someone clarify registering maps for me

I used the register maps on Active Captain, it then started uploading 3gb of G3 Bluechart data onto my 94SV+. Is this how it works? It loaded ALL of the maps? I checked on the FF in an area way South that I didn't load that grid previoualy and that data seems to be present.

I did also purchase G3 LakeVU and did the same thing, it uploaded 3gb of data but if I select an area that isn't in a grid that I previously selected, it doesn't seem to be on my unit.

At the end of the day, I have all the mapping on my FF that I need but I'm just trying to wrap my head around Garmin's method and what it is actually doing. Why "register" at all if it automatically syncs the grid regions that I previously uploaded? Confused.
