Seems like the locals called the shell crackers. It’s been 10 or so years since I’ve been down but they were plentiful and on the large side.

There are Bluegill and there are shell crackers or Red Ear.
Two distinct species. A Shell Cracker is like a blue gill that's
    running on NOS.
The Cracker would have been plentiful if F&W hadn't waited
yrs to late to classify them as a game fish. The night time
bow boats were raping KY lake of this specie because they
fell into the rough fish category.
They drug their feet on Brail boats dragging the cover of
the main channel also on doing something about the carp situation
at least 10 yrs to late on the carp, and 5 yrs late on the Shell cracker classification.
I can say all this w/o reservation, because I am retired from this
organization. Any time you try to play catch up with problems like
    these you never win. LDS
