Bought new Crestliner VT-17 in Texas to pay Louisiana Taxes not hard

I looked around and finally decided I wanted a Crestliner VT-17 with no carpet.
The dealer in BR does not carry any nor does the dealer in Bogalusa.
Their prices on their stock items were not that great either and they do not carry much inventory.

I went to Texas and the dealers over there have a lot more inventory on hand.
The dealer I bought from had so much inventory I admit it took me awhile to decide on the boat.
Found what I wanted, they had larger trollmotor, poly floor instead of carpet, and had it
in the color I wanted for less money than a carpet boat at Louisiana dealers.

Bought it and paperwork took maybe an hour and they had boat ready to go.
They waved notary and paperwork fee as I went in person to do this.
The only taxes I paid was on boat & motor.
Pay taxes on trailer where you live.
The dealer also gave me a form of what to do for my taxes and registration.

    Boat and motor -
Paid Texas taxes and got a credit toward taxes I owe where I live.
I paid 3% difference in taxes which if I would have bought boat in Louisiana the taxes
    would be the same.

Went to LDWLF and got my registration done no problems.

    Trailer
(no taxes collected at the dealer. Taxes are paid where you legally reside on drivers license)
Went to DMW and paid my taxes on the rate where I live.
Got my plate right then and there with my trailer title.

Yes. It is a little legwork but not that hard to do and dealer gave me a sheet with what to do.

Advantage for myself was I got the boat I wanted without having to order it and pay up to $800 in shipping & misc fees extra. I also got the rebates which I would have not got if I would have ordered the boat.

    warranty wise
    - boat typically does not have much issue.
    - If so I travel to Texas twice a month no big deal.

    Motor wise
    - I will use a local Mercury shop where I bought the Platinum warranty from.

Same thing I did. My boat came from a dealer in Kentucky.

People act like it is hard.
It is a little leg work, but not that hard.

From a dealer, it isn't hard. The problem comes in when someone buys from an individual and doesn't get the correct paperwork. If a seller, in Louisiana or another state, doesn't have a title on the trailer in their name, I won't even discuss price.

Individual is horrible at times. I got my boat finally swapped over but due to him not suppling a current registration for the trailer at time of purchase and him throwing all his papers away. I’m in a bind on the trailer.

All you need if it’s an out of state trailer with no title,(TX doesn’t title trailers), is a separate, notarized bill of sale for the trailer. The last one I did was easy once I went back and got that notarized. The dmv didn’t like that we put sold for $1 but hey you pay for the boat and the trailer comes with it.

If you make it too obvious, they can look up the book value on the trailer and charge you tax based on that.

Anyone ever trade in a boat in another state? Do you get a tax break with the trade in difference?

They didn’t do it by the book value though. Just went with it.

Buying from a dealer is completely different than buying from an individual out of state. Two different ball games. Buying out of state can be a pain in the ass depending on the state and who you are buying from. I’ve done both a time or two

I sold my old boat to a guy from Mississippi.
I had all paperwork original bills of sale for boat, motor, and trailer.

Back when I bought the boat I bought just the boat from dealer cash that sold out.
That dealer did not have a decent trailer for the boat as I literally bought last boat.
The boat sat a year and the factory painted trailer had bent axle.
Got trailer from mike Gerald’s back in 1995 new.
Motor I had to save to pay cash took 6 months and prop from C&M in Denham Springs.

I had all my paperwork in a folder.
    - Registration for boat and original bill of sale showed taxes paid
    - original bill of sale for motor with proof paid taxes
1995 you didn’t have motor titles.
gave him motor ID card they gave you back then.
    - trailer title which I heard important
bill of sale and tax form for trailer taxes

We went locally to notary to do paperwork.
i turned in my plate to DMV and got proof of it.
Guy called me two days later and he said everything went smooth.
