    Replacing Bunk Boards

    Untitled.png

When replacing the bunk boards, my current ones have carriage bolts that have been countersunk into the wood and carpeted over the top and of course tighten from the bottom on a 1987 ranger 374v. What is considered the best way now to mount them?.. Pretty much all of youtube videos I have watched they look like they use lag screws just screwed into the wood from the bottom. I have not seen any use carriage bolts. My worry with lag screws is that after so long they screws would strip out or bore out the hole from vibration from the road.

Should I just remount them using the carriage bolts?

If you use carriage bolts you will need a forsner bit to sink the holes. Lag screws are pretty safe but must be non rusting and have a safe distance to the top of board from screw point. I prefer carriage bolts with nuts, but they are a one way installation once they get old. Just don't let the nuts get loose you'll be O.K.

    Use new hardware.

Once carriage bolts get old and rust it’s a bitch to get the nuts off. That’s why you use stainless lag bolts.

These have worked well for me. Drill, install, carpet over and stainless bolt from the bottom up. https://www.mcmaster.com/tee-nuts

I counter sunk galvanized carriage bolts with washers and lock washers. Brown treat 2x’s.

^^This is what I'm going to do too. ALSO, you should do some maintenance on those spring hangers too.
