Going over the recommended H.P. rating

I plan on repowering my 2013 521 and really want to put a 300 4 stroke but I think the max says 250.i heard that I’d the boat is over 20ft I don’t have to follow the max guidelines and was just wondering if this was true

Yes and no. The COAST GUARD does not limit boats over 20’. However NMMA and manufactures can and do limit them that insurance, tournaments, and law enforcement may use against you.

Under 20ft is calculated per USCG formula, but for boats 20ft and larger the max recommended HP is by boat builder.

Recommended max # of people and weight is what the boat can support if swamped, my understanding is it is the same with HP. The limited HP on the sticker is in regards to max weight the boat can handle and stay upright if swamped.

Maybe state and local laws or different but to my knowledge there is no law against maximum HP over 20' at least as for as the USCG is concerned.

Insurance, tournaments, are legit concerns. Now if youwere to have an accident I would also think a good lawyer would find a way to spin this.

That said I once had a Javelin 16'8" boat that had a 110 HP sticker but came from the factory with a 120 HP.

Ask your insurance company and you'll have the answer that matters.

Good advice, but even if I got a go-ahead from them I’d still not be completely satisfied. Insurance companies don’t always [according to reports] safeguard us as well as we would wish, and what happens if you want/need to change insurance companies?

No insurance company worth dealing with will insure an over powered data plate rated boat.

For the V8 Mercury flash I would like to hear from folks that have actually done this along with performance data and if the performance flash & flash back to stock activity is stored in the ECU.

Contact Ranger and ask them if your boat will take a 300 and if it will ask them to send you a new sticker/plaque.
