    OX66 swap to HPDI

I currently have a1998, 225 hp OX66 on my boat that has one foot in the grave. It starts every time I crank it but the compression is way down and when it gets to be summer time she gets sluggish. I have found a 2006 HPDI to repower with but was looking for any input. Should I repower or go with a new power head on the ox66?

Power head. When I did mine I went the OX direction just because of the reliability. Could have rebuilt either one. CJ

I did the same thing when my ox66 blew. Repowered with a later year model lower your hpdi and the hpdi blew after about 10 hours. You're always taking a gamble with used outboards. The ox66 has a great reputation at least if you get it rebuilt you know what you have. I ended up rebuilding the ox66 after the hpdi went. Expensive mistake but you live and you learn

+2 on OX66 simplicity of maintenance, cheaper parts, and reliability.
Mechanic said hdpi is 10 percent better on fuel.
Hdpi has more parts and has little room for error on a misfire.

I replaced my hpdi 225 with an 225 ox66 that Chris Carson built for me, about 40 hrs on it, best starting mtr i have been around. the hpdi & ox66 use the same PH base gasket, had to modify the mtr cover a bit.
