    Ranger 487 vs

I just purchased a 1996 ranger 487 vs with a 200 efi. Has a 23 laser prop. Just curious what my top end and rpm’s should be. 1st time out 3 people, 1 tank full, not sure what was in the other tank, very minimal gear, top speed was 57@6400

Get rid of that prop. Way under propped. Start with a 25p tempest plus at 3.5 below pad and adjust according to rpm’s

dial it in around 5900 rpm’s

The 23P prop you will never get it where u want. Its going to over rev and under perform regardless. Even with the setback built into the Ranger a 6” plate will make it even better plus give the ability to dial in the engine height (prop to pad)

Thank you, been wondering about that, since most of my fishing will be done on the Mississippi River and shallow, I’m thinking about a hydraulic.

If it's actually turning 6400 it won't be for long, 5800 to 6000 is where it should run with a 25" tempest. Your tach is way off.

I just found that my mechanical tach was always off now that I went to a interface cable and nema 2000. It is about right to about 5000 rpm but when my nema says 5750 my mechanical tach says 7800 lol..

    On a 20' boat? I've always seen 200hp max for the 487 or 488

Max rpm's should be 5800 on that motor. You can take the tach out and turn the screw the on back that sets the number of cylinders on the back left then right a few times to try and clean the pot switch and see if that helps. Make sure you know what number it's on before you turn it and put it back to that number.
