Motor sputters out at low idle

1990 Johnson Evinrude Fast Track 150hp is sputtering out when I put the motor into gear to go at Headway speed. Doesn't seem to be a problem if I jump to a higher speed and when I cruise at a higher speed it's fine or better, although not perfect. Engine was rebuilt 2 years ago completely with all new everything you can imagine including fuel lines. Former owner said that he never had carbs adjusted properly afterwards ( which I'm thinking should have been done when the motor was rebuilt, but that's just me) but is it that simple? By simple I mean just that one problem because adjusting them all seems to be a little bit of a job? Any help is appreciated. Moo

How about a model number for your motor?

*Update* Sorry for the delay and non response. The Marine Mechanic tuned and timed the engine and found that my VRO was faulty (Fail open) and pumping too much oil into the gas mixture. I bypassed the VRO and pre-mixed the gas. The motor is running really great right now. Thanks for replying and again, sorry for not responding.

Yep, another bad VRO. What are the chances that air in the fuel line caused it to pump to much oil? I would say most likely.

I guess it did, you should have posted these pictures before, now we know for sure that the VRO was bad. I've not seen this before, I wonder what caused it? Interesting. One question, was your tach working?
    Thanks.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of those screw clamps and get either the snap clamps, wire clamps or BRP Zip Ties.

Yeah I know. The ones I had on there were falling apart, so I threw those on to hold it all together AFTER the fact.

OK. is it working now? Why I ask is when the VRO computer goes out the tach will stop working. I'm just curious how and when that hole was blown in the VRO.

I stand corrected as I am reminded that the tach WAS NOT working prior to my bypassing the pump after a call to the mechanic. Senior moment, sorry. Probably makes more sense now to you all. The tach is working now though. I looked online and have not seen another VRO blown out like that, but I haven't seen the entire internet, so. Thank you for the replies, you guys are the best!
