    loose seat pedestal

I have a 178 c and my seat pedestals constantly come unscrewed and are loose. Anyone know how to keep them tight and avoid the seat rocking back and forth as I go down the lake?

Which part comes loose? The seat to the pedestal, the pedestal holder in the deck or the driver's seat?

It's an aggravation with the Springfield bases. If you run with the seat in down the lake, it will eventually break the nut that allows you to tighten down the post (happened to me). I had a 4x6 pedestal mounted on my rod box to place the seat for running. You could mount one on your large storage box.

It is not a complete solution but it helps a lot, buy two of these, Danco 61273 2-1/4" OD x 3/4" ID x 1/8". Put one each on the pin of the pedestals and tighten them down good with a rubber strap wrench or other method to get a good grip on the pedestal.

Well, I just noticed they greatly increased the price since I bought them a year ago. They were $6 each then which I thought was high.

Good tip. I am having the same problem. Has anyone tried Teflon tape on the threads? I wonder if that will slow the loosening up.

Both of mine became loose. I think the spot weld on the nut came loose but am not sure.. I left mine alone, but I have a friend that had the problem and he went underneath and took a nut and put it on the pedestal threads and tightened it down. The posts just stay in all the time on his boat. He pulls the seats off when traveling.

A lot of us have the same problem. The felt washer seems to help.

You can get the fiber washers at home depot and they help some for about a dollar.

Thanks for the help. I will try the rubber washer and the lock nut. I have considered mounting a small hinge to deck with a hole in the vertical plane, then drill a hole in pedestal so I could slip a hitch pin in to secure pedestal. I would leave attached most of the time but if I wanted to remove the seat I could pull the hitch pin and let hinge fall flat to avoid a tripping hazard. Anyone think that might work?

I think over time the base will wear and the pedistal will no longer come tight exactly where your hole lines up anymore.

Search for compression, wave, or Bellville washers.

I had my dealer contact Ranger to have the bases and seat post replaced with the drop in style like the glass bots. It was all done under warranty and never had another loose post.

blueltra 2 can you show me a picture or stock numbers of the replacement pedestals and bases that were installed. If my washers don't work I will do this, my boat is now two years old so I doubt it is still under warranty.
