    TR-196 planing issue

Fished a tourney last weekend, and with both livewells full I had a hell of a time getting on plane........then when I finally did, it porpoised like a mother. I raised the jackplate (hydraulic) up a little and the low pickup alarm went off, so I had to start with it all the way down, and my trim down. I understand the physics behind the porpoise - but how do I overcome this and what's the best way to take off with full livewells and avoid all this?

    Tempest plus - 24p (3 blade).....smaller vent holes. Everything I"m reading shouts I should buy a Fury 4 blade.....but I can't swing the cost right now.

Could try a bailey hydrofoil if changing prop doesnt help as much as you need.

I tried a Fury 4 25 on mine and it was a rocket out of the hole and handled great. The only issue I had with the 25 is I hit the rev limiter. It was running strong too. I was at 70 and climbing when I hit the limiter. I'm wanting to try a 26 and see if it will stay out of the limiter.

I was even thinking about dropping down to a 23p.....I don't get close to my rev limiter as it is.

I would try taking a small plug out and putting in a medium or large plug in.

How is the Holeshot with live wells empty? Setting up my dad’s 196 and his Holeshot is slow with live wells full. He’s running a 25 Tempest with 2 large plugs and and 1 wide open. Going to remove another large and see how it does. Removing all your plugs it will probably blow out on take off.

Engine height? Good starting point is 2.5” to 2.25” below pad.

Yeah - I've got a hydraulic jackplate - so motor height is always good.

Has this also been the same setup; or have you changed it?

My 196 had the same issue with a load but the porpoising was only under 35 MPH. I went to a 24" Bravo 1 with the full flare and PVS holes added and dropped my motor to 3" below the pad. Hole shot is great and porpoising is minimal only at about 26-27 MPH. Mine never porpoised over 35 so I don't know if this helps you. I am not a top end guy so I have no idea how much WOT speed I might have lost. The next best prop for me is the 23" Rev 4.

Wait until you get caught in a down pour and have both livewells full and a 250# co-angler.

No worries - I've got 850 and 1,000 gph bilge pumps.

You say you are nowhere near the limit of your RPMs even loaded light? If that's the case you probably need a smaller pitch prop or send yours away for some work and have it depitched some. Adding some tip cup would probably help or eliminate the porpoise too.

It sounds like you need more lift and possibly a lower pitched prop. The pvs vents will help with the motor spooling up on take-off but if you get to much venting you will blowout on breakover.
In the rain your boat will be heavier no matter how good you bilge pumps are because the carpet holds water.

Some of the suggestions you are getting are probably from guys with an Optimax motor and your EFI will need a different prop than the Opti. With the 08 TR196/200 Opti I had I ran a 25p Tempest+.
