I've tried to keep up with the technology but can anyone tell me how much better the new units i.e. mega, chirp, are over my antique 1198's? Will the new ones talk to my old one"s? Thanks!

The current G3 and G3N models have Dual Spectrum Low-Q CHIRP 2D sonar and the additional MEGA Imaging frequency. The SI transducer has a dedicated Down Imaging piezo, your 1198 does not.
The displays are rectangular 16:9 ratio and brighter.

You can share waypoints.
You can share like sonar technologies/freqencies IF you turn CHIRP off.

Your 1198 has Dual Beam 83/200 kHz 2D sonar.
The new Helix units have Dual Spectrum High Wide CHIRP 140-240 kHz 2D sonar.
Your 1198 has 455 kHz and 800 kHz Imaging.
The new Helix SI units have 455 kHz, 800 kHz, and 1200 kHz single frequency Imaging and those can also be CHIRPED.

MEGA stands for 1.2 Megahertz or 1200 Kilohertz
