Rt198p Transom Weld Bottom Of Boar

I’m emailing Ranger tomorrow but meantime:
I have what I think is excessive weld bead all the way across the bottom of my transom where the bottom meets.
I think this is affects water flow behind the boat.
I would like to “file” not grind the weld level with boat bottom of the boat.
Any comments? I don’t know the design/configuration of the transom to the bottom of boat and don’t want to weaken welded area.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I am expecting mine sometime next month. Definetly something for me to look at! Let us know what Ranger says.

I looked at many before deciding on the 188. They all had a large bead on the bottom of the transom so I assumed this was normal?

Kinda hard not to have a weld bead on that edge, when welding 2 aluminum pieces together.

That true, but I’m just speaking of just under 1/4” excess.
im a weld inspector of course.
But id just like to smooth out the bottom 2 pads so water will “go up” behind toward motor
vs being potentially forcing down the back of the boat up while running.
The excess is like a mini-trim tab , to me anyway.
I can live with it, but if Ranger will ok it I’d like to file it smooth as much as possible anyway.
I’d do it , but don’t want to void warranty.
Ranger will NOT likely allow it and that is the way it will be.

I guess I need to cancel my order now because I was under the impression that those pieces were just super glued together!

it's probably 3 beads - one on each face and then one on top of the other too. this is to stop any hot cracking that would happen if it was done in one pass.

Could you give a link to the aluminum page? Everything I see is general info and glass boats.

Is it this outside weld? If so, it’s to keep the boat from porpoising.

That weld is clearly there for a purpose.

I would say, if there not putting the wedges on the bottom, for porpoising. That inter bead could be for that reason. There should be no crack there. The corner crack is done with the transom coming down to sit inside the bottom hull.

That's funny right there now..... Your are going to ask Ranger if you can file on the welds on their boat????

Was this written on April Fools day and I missed it?

I bet they got a kick out of it when they read the request up at the factory.

They need good laugh like we all do! But there are structural and warranty reasons to ask.

No, I don’t have a second isolated weld like that.

It's a feature to stop porpoising. Mine has a couple of wedges, which I like better.
