Exclamation Out of state visitors fishing St Clair

Not a fan of a parking lot full of out of state plates but if you’re going to come here you should at least know the rules and regulations. Please abide by these and help preserve our resource

And since it’s that time again here is some information you will need to know

    FISHING SEASON
This pertains to bass fishing and St Clair only

NOTE: Immediate Release means IMMEDIATE not take 5 photos, weigh it 3 times, wait for your buddy’s boat to come over and see it or video chat with who the hell cares PUT THE FISH BACK ASAP

    FISHING LICENSES
Michigan and Ontario CA licenses can be purchased online
Walpole Island Licenses can only be purchased in a few places
Algonac Ferry to Walpole, most stores and campground on Walpole
But in Michigan there is only one place I know of
Lake Side Fishing Shop - Corner of 10 Mile Rd and Jefferson - (586) 777-7003

    DNR NETS
These are trap nets approximately 650 feet long each is marked with 2 flags and 9 small buoys placed and check intermittently and they can be a hazard

    NO WAKE ZONES
On the lake the rule is the same as the yellow rule below

    BOAT LAUNCHES
It’s always best to launch at the closest launch to wherever you plan to fish
Each launch opens/closes on their own schedule contact them for times and dates

    SAFETY
This is not your local pond you’re out there playing with freighters and this water is not forgiving
Yes we will pull your butt out if you get in trouble but we would rather be fishing so please check all your equipment and make sure you have all the required USCG safety equipment and it works
Note: it’s always best to tell someone what your plans are for the day just in case

Very good information thank you for sharing. We are heading back for our third annual trip this Friday. I know you guys hate the out of staters but we take this privilege serious. My son and I go all
over the nation to chase big fish. St. Claire is a true gem. I can't imagine having a fishery like this here.
By chance does anyone know what public ramps are open? Last year we used the Harley ramp the whole time.
    thanks,
    Mike

I don't hate out of staters and neither do the people I fish with. Some people get bent out of shape with out of staters power loading. Some people have nothing better to do but complain. Anyway, all the ramps should be open when you come up. I personally will never launch at Crocker ramp. Harley is a good choice. Enjoy your trip!

This really is great info for people that don’t know the water. Only thing I’d suggest to add is what is required to be on the boat for coast guard regulations. US vs Canada comparisons.

Due to the litigious nature of our society no one wants to post this type of information in fear that it is not complete, changes or is incorrect and someone gets hurt

Here are a few websites that can help you on this issue

    https://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1...onal-Boats.pdf

    https://www.boaterexam.com/navigatio...s-signals.aspx

    http://www.orionsignals.com/images/s...on%20Guide.pdf

    https://www.boatus.org/study-guide/equipment/vds/

I can say that Canada did change it law and flare guns are now allowed
Also I was told Canada requires that your throwable flotation device have 25 feet of rope attached to it

This is big water and the minimum equipment is just that the "MINIMUM" and you should carry more

I carry 3X the required flares/Signal Devices as well as a “PLB” (Personal Locator Beacon) with GPS. This is not required but will be your best if you need it

NOTE: You can run into that one Coast Guard or local Law Enforcement agent that has a different idea of what is required So its best to have more than the minimum required equipment just in case

    Out of state Tournament Directors

You must register your event with the Michigan DNR to avid overdue stress on our launch facilities and resources

Please visit the Michigan DNR website to find all information on this subject
    https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,...0410--,00.html

We also ask that you provide tournament results via that website to help us manage this great resource

We have been inundated with out of state tournaments and many of these groups are not registering their events and abusing our resource

For this reason Michigan Tournament Directors and anglers are being asked to report any suspicious tournaments/events

If you are caught running an event without registering you can be fined up to $500.00 and or serve 90 days in jail

You may also incur other fines and penalties if you’re found to be misusing our resource
