Custom Troll Tamer on Ultrex Stabilizer

I’ve had a couple requests for this so I thought it would be better if I just post it

    tamer3.jpg tamer2.jpg tamer1.jpg

I did this 2 years ago when I bought the Ultrex

First I started with the troll tamer for the Fortrex in the shortest version (#3) purchased from tackle warehouse

I took the bolt off the top and took it to the hardware store and bought a threaded dowel rod in the same size as the bolt
1/4-20 if I remember correctly – don’t hold me to that

This is a photo of the standard mounting of the tamer showing the bolt I’m talking about
    tamer4.jpg

Now the rod on the minn kota stabilizer has a hole through it but it is to small you need to drill it out to the correct size for the tap
    tamer5.jpg

Cut the dowel to length and then drill and tap the dowel rod once you have the pieces ready to go together use permatex to lock the pieces together

I fish Lake St Clair and run rough water all the time and this has never come lose

    NOTE1:
I learned this the hard way – drill the hole out a couple sizes at a time to keep the hole straight – mine leans just a little to one side

    NOTE2:
There is an easier way just using the threaded tip with the 2 nuts but I didn’t think of it till I was done

NOTE3: I did replace the plastic nut minn kota provides with 2 stainless nuts because the plastic one does come lose (not seen in photos)

    Hope this help

Now that right there is a clever idea!!! I wanted to add a trol tamer to mine but the distance from the mount to the deck in standard installation is too close. My boat does not have a gunnel to mount the Ultrex to so it lies pretty flat to the deck with only a inch or two under the mount arm.

I did mine on the gunnel because it interfered with my rods on the inside.

That's pretty awesome, I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Ultrex. I think I'll make this part of the install

How deep did you drill the hole for the dowel into the stabilizer bar?

It’s been a while but if I remember right I drilled about 2” in

I only used a 2” threaded dowel but wanted to make sure I have enough room

The troll tamer took almost an inch of the dowel so a little more than an inch went into the stabilizer rod

If you’re going to use just the tip of the troll tamer I would say again 2” would work just fine

Thanks for the quick reply. And you used permatex cold weld to finish it off?

I’m probably overthinking it, just want to do it right the first time. Thanks again.

Did you have to cut the MK stabilizer? I just bought a troll lock and not a fan where the release base would be installed. The ultrex cable is in the way. Your install would be the way to go I think

Yes just like a standard install of the MK stabilizer you need to cut the rod to the proper length then drill out the hole for the tap/threads

Set the troll tamer base and rod on the deck turn the MK stabilizer rod upside down

Holding the pieces together standing them next to the mount for the MK stabilizer draw a line on the rod at the top of the mount and then draw a second line a half inch above the first and that is your cut line

I fish eastern Lake Ontario. I use the Troll-Tamer at the head and two Velcro straps on the shaft. I also added an upright extension on the foot release for the TT so I could push it with my toe. The stock release configuration is too flush to the deck and is hidden by the strapped down rod butts.
