    Dobyns 704CB Composite equivelant

I love my Dobyns 704CB Composite rods, want to get another. I'm a powell fan but I don't see that they have a similar action without getting a longer rod which is not good for a jerk. Suggestions on a good less expensive alternative?

Phenix X-10 is a pretty sweet jerkbait and small topwater rod.

Powell had the Nusance line which I think had two CBs in that range, 704 and 705CB I think. The 704 was a little lighter action. All under $100. Might be able to find one of those somewhere. New max line has a 703CB - don't think this would work for jerks, and a 695 which might be worth a look.

I like some "tip" and the Dobyns 705CB is too stiff for me for a jerk. I'd guess like you said the 703 Powell might be to weak and I'm guessing the 695 might be too stiff.

I had (and want another) St Croix Premier 7' Medium. It's not listed as a crankbait rod but it had a decent, parabolic action to it. I fished lipless on mine and never had an issue pulling hooks.

This one is a medium moderate, just 2" shorter which might be good: Genesis II Cast Rod 6'10" Jerk Bait Medium

'swhy I thought of that Nusance. I only had one in my hands. Didn't fish with it, but though it wasn't heavy enough for spinnerbaiting, but work for shallow cranking or a jerkbait. They may also have them in the Inferno line. I use the Endurance 610CB, but I almost wanna say it has too much tip for jerkbaiting. I feel like I really have to rip the bait to make it move.

The Tatula Elite 701MLRB is a fine jerk bait, top water, smaller treble hook moving bait rod that may suit your needs...

Second this. Absolutely LOVE my X-10. So much so that I just picked up an X-13 I'm hoping will make a great heavier chatterbait and lipless rod that can pull double duty on Ploppers and the like. They're crazy light for a composite rod and the action is awesome.

I use the 703cb glass with braid and flouro or mono leader and it works great.

The Dobyns 704CB glass it too whippy for my liking on Jerks. Powell might be very different though.

I love the 704cb for small cranks but as others have said it is too whippy for jerkbaits IMO. The 684cb and 685CB are both great jerkbait rods. I use both depending on the bait and time of year. The 684 has a lot less tip than the 704 and the 685 can really make a jerkbait dance.

Are you talking 704cb glass or composite? The glass is a small crankbait rod for me like you say, but the composite is a perfect tip for jerks IMO.

The Tatula is a medium light, I'd have to get my hands on that one and see how much backbone it has. The Phenix X-10 7' M looks similar to the 704CB for sure

I was talking about the graphite - the 704CB. The 704 CB glass is a nice crank rod too. The 704 CB has too soft a tip for my preference for jerkbaits - its OK for baits that don't need a ton of action. The 684 being a little shorter feels a half power stiffer and works well. I prefer the 685cb.

I have 2 704cb graphite models and really like them. Just picked up the tatula elite 701mlrb and it's awesome! It feels a lot like the 704. Only thing is, it has a shorter handle, which I actually like way better for jerkbaits. But it is just a touch stiffer. Had to compare em side by side to really tell. Overall weight Wise the Daiwa feels lighter.

Ya. A "Randy Howell" rod. I'm surprised by how much I like it. The handle might not be as nice for casting but having it be short when working a jerkbait is super nice.
