Mercury 300xs digital trim guage playing up

Hi,
new to the forums and thought i might post here to see if i can get some help,

i have a 300xs on the back of the boat and the sc5000 vessel view in it, digital trim has always been perfect until recently

i took it out the other day and was fine, then next minute without touching trim it would go to max (25) jump down to 16, down to 0, up to 25 again, just all over the shop,

tried to recalibrate which didnt fix the problem,

what should i look at next?

Suggest posting this in the 3L forum (what your engine is) and be sure to include engine serial number in post.
