Question 2005 merc 150 xr6 shifting in reverse sluggish

Just put my lower unit back in and my reverse gear goes in sometimes and sometimes it goes in roughly. Serial number is 1B029436. Not sure why? Is there an adjustment. Took lower unit off for new waterpump. Any suggestion on what I need to do? Sometimes it goes in smoothly. No issues with neutral or forward gears.
    Thanks Dave Ervin

I'd look at the linkage where cable attaches. Mine was not tight enough to keep the cable from trying to come out.
