2 Part Question 1990 Evinude 150 and 2000 Johnson 150

First, I have a 1990 Evinrude 150 that out of nowhere started to not engage in forward. I put it in forward and it feels like it engages but give a little throttle and I hear clatter and doesnt move. After a couple of attempts it will engage. I am thinking the dog ears are shot. I looked at the linkage and didnt see anything out of the normal. What do you guys think?

Second, I am looking at a 2000 Johnson 150 in case the fix to the Evinrude is outrageous. If I go his route, will the control cables for the Evinrude work or will everything need to be changed?
