In the past decades ago when I primarily fished for bass, small jigs up to 1/8 oz. were only used for smallmouth. Couldn't beat using a 3" Mr Twister curl tail in rivers to catch smallies. Of course the Arkie weedless jigs I tied silicone skirts to were mostly 3/8 oz and my best largemouth producer. I don't know whden I got into using small plastic lures and light jigs, but once I got into pouring my own plastic lures, I included small and medium size lures that could be used with 1/32 oz - 1/8 oz unpainted ball head jigs. I could cover a lot of water casting them at different speeds and work different depths and cover.
There are other jig head designs, but the ball head allows me to chose different hook sizes to match lures used and how they're used. I would think nothing of rigging a 1/24 oz jig and #1/o hook to a 5" Slider Worm. The slow fall and mid-depth imparted action gets bit a lot of the time. As far as fish size, I've caught 7lb catfish, 4 lb chain pickerel and 3.5 lb bass using 8# test braid and a light action rod to cast light lures.
