    How much is to much?

Not going to mention any names but I just did the math on the largest tournament trail in my area. Based on the posted pay out and entry fee of one particular tournament they are keeping right at 25%. Is that about normal or a bit much compared to tournament in other areas of the country? I know there are expenses to putting on a 100 boat tournament. Just seems like a lot since they are keeping $500 more than first place pays.

Never understood why it was anyone’s business what someone paid out and how much they made? If they advertise a payout and pay what they said then who’s business is it to wonder how much they profited?

Small organizations around here payback 80-85 percent..and its not just about expenses..if they don't make some money, why bother doing it? Didn't mean to come off smart azz, but your thread title and the comment "not naming names" kinda indicates your looking at one organization's payback, if you have issues with it...find something else.

No problem, just didn't want it to seem like I was bashing by saying the name of the trail

People who have never directed a trail with 50 or more boats each event usually do not realize the work and time commitment involved. Way more work than a club event.

40-50 boat (team) club with 5-6 tourneys per season.
We pay back about 95% of the entry fees. The other 5% goes into our boat ramp building/repair fund.
Memberships ($25 per person) pay for the insurance.

Damm every penny of our multiple division tournament trail is paid back by the end of the year. 95% at the ramp with 5% going to the pot for the 2 day classic. Not a single penny of any entry fee or membership fee goes to pay for any costs. All trail costs are paid for by trail sponsors.

Sometimes they keep extra money that goes towards the classic at the end. At least that’s how some tournaments here are worked.

There are a ot unseen costs to running tournaments. Paperwork, fliers, website, postage if used, Scales and weigh equipment, tents. Trophies or plaques. The cost of going to and from events. In our area 75-85% is normal. Like said above money is witheld for classics.

As stated membership money pays the liability insurance policy.

20 boats at 100 each. Payout 80% gives the organization 400.00 profit per event. Figure the director puts in a 10-12 hour day running the event plus entering results after the event.

Some organizations pay directors other let them fish for free.

I didn't believe it but did the numbers. BFL's pay 53 % of entries. To me that is not very good.

Well the BFL rapes everyone and keeps about 50%. You should feel lucky them only keeping 25%. Lol
