    Fire Medic or Corpsman

If the sh!t hit the fan and you were in trouble in a medical situation who would you rather have work on you? A fire medic with 2 yrs on the job experience or a corpsman with 2 combat tours? No wrong answers, just curious on who you would rather tend to you as a first responder.

Fire medic would be more up to date on medical protocols and would not be alone.

Depends on the type of injury, if the injury was impalement or crushed almost amputated body part, even a GSW a corpsman as they are probably more familiar dealing with those types of injuries. Something more minor or heart attack related normal fire medics probably again more experienced.

Bottom line though whichever were available the quickest!

Whoever got there the quickest. If I had to choose I'd choose an Army 18D.

    This.
22 years in the fire service and I've worked with some great medics. But, my daughter is also a combat medic and I am always amazed at the trauma procedures she is trained in and signed off to perform. Stuff that me as an EMT basic and the medics I work with are not signed off to do. And they're damned good at it too.
However, if I'm having a cardiac event, or illness as opposed to injury, give me a fire medic and a hospital <15 miutes away all day long.

My cousin did his service time in the gaurd as a medic. I remember him telling me that the life span of the medic in conflict like during ww2 was very short. If a combat medic survived two tours I would want him.

Depends on how much actual field experience each one has on actual patients. Book knowledge and real world experience are totally different. You can practice on mannequins all you want but a real patient that is critical is no place to make mistakes. Experience makes all the difference in the world.

Being a retired Paramedic, I would take the combat medic anyday!

Worked with a Vietnam vet who was a combat medic that spent quite a bit of time over there and came across stuff you can not imagine unless you were over there. Have witnessed him on 2 occasions in life/death situations and he was amazing. Got a son-in-law comming up on 25 years in the Army and he is what Delta Force is all about.

As a civilian paramedic that works on a military base, I have seen good and bad in both. It depends on the entities procedures, guidelines and equipment that would be the deciding factor given the medics approach to proficiency is the same. I feel like I am able to do quite a lot, paralyze someone to intubate them, shock their heart, pace their heart, administer drugs like fentanyl, ketamine, rocuroniun , IO bones etc....

I think one big difference is paramedics have to deal with a pedeatric population which adds a different dynamic to the job.

Never saw an actual doctor my entire hitch. I would take the corpsman all day long, every day.

I was a Corpsman in the Air Force. We had decent training. That was during Viet Nam. I'm guessing the training is as good if not better now. I would have no issues with either party. Both should be professional and do their job.
