    Curado 70 gear conversion

I was poking around on Tackle Trap's site, and I came across a 5.5:1 gear conversion kit for a Curado 70. I've never swapped gears in a reel for the sole purpose of changing the gear ratio, and I typically just buy a another reel when it's needed (it's legitimately a problem, but I'm sure many of you here can relate haha). However, I have a spare 70 kicking around that I'm not using, but I'd love to see how this reel will perform with the slower ratio. There's a number of uses I can gain, so I'm 100% sold on doing it. I wanted to check in here and see if anyone has done a similar gear swap on a Curado 70 before I pull the trigger. I'm curious what the IPT difference is, and I suppose it'd be nice to know if there are any other changes to expect/consider for any gear swaps in general. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    21.4 IPT
Ive been looking at doing this swap as well for a 70HG that needs something to do. I like to slow roll Swing impact fats near bottom of 20-25 foot lake so prefer low IPT reels.

Currently use 23.6 IPT 5.8:1 geared Daiwa SV105P reel.

21.4 IPT is close to my 200E5’s I believe. I was thinking of using it for squarebills and other shallow cranks. For cranking I’ve been using 200e5’s for years, and more recently a Met MGL for some, but I think the 70 would be awesome in this application. I just think the 7:1 is a bit too fast for that.

droy….. keep us posted on how the conversion turns out. I would love to have a lower gear ratio in one of my 70's.

I bought this kit and did the conversion. Its super easy and I love the 70 for a cranking reel. Especially now when the wiggle wart bite is good. Its a the perfect size spool for those smaller cranks.

Will do! Gonna by the kit at the end of the week. We’re still iced in here in New England, so it might be a while before I get out on the water with it.

Perfect. That’s exactly what I’m looking to do with it.

I wish they made it for the 71, left handed.

I did a few conversions on older curado E7. Simple enough. Just make sure you change pinion gear as well.

    Droy,

Have you done the gear conversion yet to your Curado 70, if so, how did it turn out??

They’ve been out of stock. We’ve got them ordered though.

    Pike,

Give me a heads up when they come in. I was curious if Droy had finished his conversion yet. I am considering upgrading bearings in two Tatula CT Type R's that I picked up last weekend. So many bearing options, but I am not the mechanical type..LOL.

Wishful Thinking - I should have bought two instead of one.

The gear sets are the same part numbers for a "I" series reel. Just buy a gear set that corresponds to the CU200/201 I series reel.
