New four stroke vs Yamaha OX66 fuel?

I fish several days per week and I知 going through gas like a madman. I知 considering a new boat because I知 thinking the fuel savings alone will offset a payment. Anybody have a comparison between say a new Merc or Yamaha four stroke and my 2001 Yamaha OX66 200?

Is it an HDPI or just a 2 stroke. A new 4 stroke should use 25% less fuel than a regular 2 stroke.

Keep in mind I’ll be putting down approximately $25k. That will make for a very small payment. And I’ll have it paid off completely in a couple years. That small payment should be substantially less than my gas bill right now. I run my boat three to five days per week and a weekend day during tournament season. I go through a lot of fuel.

If you want one, buy one. You can’t logically justify the cost from fuel though, price what they charge for a maintenance service and any savings are blown away. Not to mention insurance cost and finance charges. $25k note at 7% interest @ 6 years is going to be something like $400-$500 a month.

But I swear I remember your name from someplace, maybe the TFF??? Do you currently have a Skeeter, if yes, what model?

EDIT: looked through your post and it looks like you have a Charger.

Down here on the coast we run 100 miles minimum every time we go offshore with twin outboards.
The point is we are very aware of the fuel burn of every outboard ever made, lol.

The Yamaha OX66 is much beloved because it is the all time most reliable two stroke outboard.

But to your point, you can safely assume you will burn about one third less fuel with any current 4 stroke than the OX66.

The fuel savings is my ace in the hole when I tell the wife what I’m about to do. Otherwise she’ll go bananas. I have to justify the expense somehow if I want to sleep inside

The cost of the fuel you save won't come close to making that payment but if you want it at least it will help a little. Just don't buy anything else for the new boat for five years.

Old efi's vs newer 2 or 4 stroke. 2 to 2.5 mpg vs 5 to 6 mpg. All this is relative, how you drive your hull design, size of the engine etc.

If you rip through a hundred gallons a day... let's say gas moves up to three bucks a gallon. Daily: $300. Weekly: $1,500 Monthly: $6,000
You change to four stroke with an *ADVERTISED* twenty percent savings: 80 gallons @ $3.00: Daily: $240 Weekly: $1,200 Monthly: $4,800
    Monthly fuel savings @ $3.00 gallon: $1,200
    Yearly savings: $14,400
So your return on investment will take two years. IF you continue to run that hard that long. If you run 50 gallons a day, then it'll take four years.
I'll save you more than that without spending a penny...
Record all fuel purchases to your boat and file for fuel tax rebate from the IRS: You can get $.183 cent per gallon back
    IRS form: 4163

I HATE taxes. I fully endorse any method possible to not feed the machine.
The tax rebates are an easy way to push back. I did it every year from '84 till 2001. It's a decent amount of money if you're really ripping through boat fuel.
I averaged $1,500 a year from the Feds.

PLUS if you live in Texas, you get about the same amount back if you file for the rebate, comptroller form 06-106
So, three grand average at the end of the year for ten minutes of paperwork.
You HAVE to keep good records, I only got audited once, and glad I had everything. It doesn't suck to run a diesel truck, that makes it hard for them to argue.

The engine alone wasn’t enough for me to buy another. I was wanting upgraded grape, tm and engine. So I started from scratch and bought new. You can buy used as well.

As a savings add in the cost of the two cycle oil you must be going through.

Man if you can afford it get a whole new boat with a miserly 4 stroke on the back!

Then you can get it rigged with a new Ultrex and whatever graphs you want.

I just bought a couple new HDS Live units and an Ultrex. After looking at the new boats my fuel mileage doesn’t seem so bad. Lol
