How much better are the new units??

Still have the 1199's and debating on upgrading. Besides the dedicated DI are the new units that much better?? Opinions please

Mega imaging is amazing. But my first humminbirds were my 2 current Helix mega Side Imaging units. I came over from Lowrance HDS Gen2's and Gen3's and I have been blown away by the clarity in side and down imaging....... but 2d..... not so much (compared to what I was used to with Lowrance). However.... 2d is much improved, from what I've seen, in the newer "dual spectrum" transducers that gen2n mega DI units and Gen3 units have.

I'm still running 1199s I'm not changing yet. I'm to broke to replace perfectly good units.

The Imaging is awesome on the mega units, but the prices are depressing.Think I will keep my G1 and G2 for now.

If you know what you're looking at, why upgrade?

I agree with this when I run my 1199 at 800khz it's pretty decent I can tell what I'm seeing. I don't use down imaging at all and I don't think I will catch any more fish by upgrading.

Wouldn't go back to an 1199 if you gave me 8 of them. The new units are just plain easier to read. That's a fact! I could read the older units fine. But now, I don't need to stop the chart and zoom in or take screenshots to help. Just look and there's a bunch of large shad with stripers lurking below them. Not my target species so I move on. Look, there's smaller bait with a school of crappie under them. Time to start trolling and filling the livewell!

I’m sure the new units are great, just like the Gen 2 when they first came out. But they’re not as good as the Gen 4 will be. If what you have is working and you’re happy with it don’t spend your money because you’ll never catch up with it. These companies depend on that. It’s just like cell phones, computers and TVs, If you always got to have the latest and greatest then go get it, just don’t use Loctite because you’ll be replacing it with a GEN 4,5,6 before long. On the other hand, if you’re a professional fisherman and your livelihood depends on the slightest advantage, then it’s probably worth it. That said, I’m thinking about a GEN three for the front of my boat! Lol

If you've got a 10 or 12, there's not really any difference between G2 & g3 except for extended range on the mega frequencies.

Onix are really good units. By friend has one that gives really nice images. The 2d is good too. He hasn't updated his in awhile and works flawlessly.

Also the G3 and G3N units have standard Dual Spectrum 2D sonar with all models.

wouldn't it be nice if HB made units that were upgradeable, for a price...or taken in exchange for newer units. Kind of like software, computers, etc.
