It’s very labor intensive, so trying to save money on paint isn’t a good plan

Nothin cheap about it...the prep work has to be right to do anything to the product being applied to your trailer. Do it the cheap route and you’ll be doing it again ...very soon.

My local trailer repair shop offered to prep and repaint for $700. May take them up on that instead of doing it myself.

I have seen good results using bed liner. You don't have to get a smooth finish on the existing paint and it's tough. That is what I'l going with.

Did it to my trailer almost 7 years ago and still holding up great. I did totally strip the trailer, sanded, primed and wiped it down one last good time before applying.

You can go to Tractor Supply and get an oil based enamel. They also sell a hardener to mix in. That's the easiest and best finish for the money.

Rustoleum is another oil based enamel available in the big box stores in spray cans or quarts. It works, and the color is easily matched in the future if you need to repaint later.

I was thinking of maybe using a rust neutralizer first

I'm using the bed liner on my trailer. I'll update when I get it done.

I have done a lot of rusty equipment scrape it get the loose rust off clean trailer well with lacquer thinner or Acetone apply Rustoleum heavy duty rust protection, let dry for at LEAST 24 hours if cooler then longer. Then if you want apply a spray on bed liner. I have never found anything better then the Rustoleum Heavy Rust protection for stopping rust.

I had mine done with Rhino Liner in 2010 after I went through a stretch of road that had fresh rock put down. It has held up great, and still looks good.
