There was a story some years ago about a guy that caught a LM in California that was just shy of the world record. I forget what he named it but he released it and then became obsessed with catching it again so he would have the record. If I remember correctly he spent every minute of his spare time on that lake trying.

The end of the story was that he got a call from a marina on the lake that there was a floater that could be the bass. He rushed to the dock where they had it and sure enough it was the same fish. There was no way to tell if it had grown enough to be the record.

Everybody and his dog will be on Guntersville, like their not already. Lived there for 24 years, in the spring you could just about walk across the lake on the boats.

Dottie was caught once at 25lbs 1oz but they were site fishing and she was foul hooked so not eligible for the record. They kept trying to catch her legally for the record but could not.

Thanks for posting that. I had wanted to type that he was contacted by rangers but wasn't sure so I said marina. The fact that the rangers knew him and his phone number says a lot.

There's also an interesting "after-story" about the guy who actually found her floating and how he turned it it but the got the run-around from the F&W folks...

Obviously an older story so I don't know if it ever all got worked out - I hope it did.
