My wife took a picture with her phone of the squirrel beside the hawk, looked like they were close enough to touch each other.
At one point there were two squirrels where that one is in the picture.
We think the hawk was waiting on a chipmunk since later he was on the ground looking where chipmunks go through the fence.

Watched a smaller hawk chase a squirrel around a few days ago. The rat would hop onto a tree just in time, bird would fly up onto a branch and wait for it to get back on the ground. Went on for quite a while until the squirrel decided to leave through the branches.

One time I was in a deer stand and I saw a hawk come down on a squirrel and they fought for about a minute and the squirrel won. Squirrel run off and the hawk was staggering and had to wait a few minutes before flying off.
A mistake on your part does not constitute a emergency on my part.

A few years ago, my son and I were in yard working. We hear a thud hit ground. We turn around and see three hawks on a tree limb. Below hawks is a squirrel on the ground. The hawks had dropped squirrel, but he was dead. The hawks were looking around acting innocent, almost like children caught in the act. We left for a few minutes, so Hawks could enjoy their meal.

    I love to watch hawks.

Squirrels are clever little buggers. Is it possible he's figured out the hawk isn't much danger if it can't swoop down on him? I see them mocking our pets all the time sitting just outside the window or climbing just high enough to get out of reach of the dog.

Only momentary. That squirrel will not last long not being afraid of the hawk.

I used to have squirrels all over my yard. Last year a pair of Red Tailed hawks moved in and I haven't seen a squirrel in months!

I had a beagle at my last house and the squirrels taunted the hell out of that dog.

That photo is probably in Michigan and the Hawk/Squirrel are thawing out and have a truce.
You should know that in bee tending if you don't shut your trap the bees will get out.

The one I posted was taken this morning from the back of my house in Virginia. The hawk left later, then came back and was on the fence above where chipmunks come in the yard to get seeds and grapes I put out for them. My wife chased it away twice.

That squirrel has learned the wisdom of keeping one's friends close, and enemies closer.
