I am one of the defenders to a point. A local fill in caddie can in no way expect to make as much % as the regular caddie. Regular caddie was way more than just carry the bags. It is his 1 and only job. Different roles throughout the tour, but most are business partners in a sense and consult as swing coach, psychiatrist, situational awareness, etc. Part time caddies carry the bag and give local knowledge. That is it. Its a 2-5 day bonus and not much more, so in no way should they expect the same amount. This guy made $50-200 per day as local caddie. Their initial agreement was $1,000 if he missed the cut, $2,000 if he made the cut, $3,000 for a top-20 finish and $4,000 for a top 10. This for less than a week in which the caddie would've expected to make between $250 - $1000 max. I would bet that is a pretty standard substitute caddie deal. He won and gave the guy an extra $1,000 as a bonus, then at some time very soon after offered the guy another $15,000. Either after talking to other golfers or his conscious. I am sure there is not a lot of precedence set for winning with a local substitute caddie. The local rejected it and went public. Agents, sponsors and the PGA got involved behind the scenes and Kuchar agreed to pay up. Borderline extortion IMO.

if the caddie agreed to the fee before hand cant see what the problem is besides other folks without a horse in the race whining about it. i doubt there was anything in that amount of time the caddie could have made that much money at.

The belittling of how much the caddie made for a living IMO is what made him look bad. If he had just said I paid him the agreed to amount I dont think it would have been as big of a deal.

I agree. We at our company had a person come in and speak and his fee was a lot, but was well known. He got sick and had to be replaced. We went from a A level speaker to a B level speaker and he did the exact same thing but we paid the B level a lot less money.

On Paul Finebaum show he had a guest that had worked as a caddie and knew Kucher former caddie and he stated that he is known for this and not his first time to stiff a caddie. He stated that the reason you do not hear more about this is that just as a whistleblower will find it hard to find a job so it is with a caddie if they put their dirty laundry out for public consumption

Excellent assessment. Kuchar pocketed $1.3 million. He could have gotten some real positive PR by just cutting the local guy a fat check up front without having to be prodded to do so. I don’t know that the guy was deserving of the full 10% because as stated he didn’t incur the usual expenses of a touring caddy. But, 5% would have been excessively generous, Kuchar would have never missed it, and all the drama could have been avoided.

No way I would pay him the normal 10%. That 10% that a regular caddie makes takes into affect all the times that they don't win and he doesn't get paid and all the time they spend outside of actual tournaments practicing. This guy filled in for one tournament did not put in the time a normal caddie does. $5,000 is probably low compared to what Kucher made, but they did have a prearranged deal that the caddie was fine with until he found out he could make more money.

As a golfer I’ve been quietly following this...I’m not 100% sure where I stand. They had an agreement, Matt paid what they agreed to plus a grand IF the stuff I’ve read is correct. If he hadn’t finished in the money no one would have said a word, but since he made so much he’s expected to throw the agreement out? I can’t get with that.

On tour the caddie has a LOT to do, they don’t just carry sticks. Want to be paid like a tour caddie, become one. Matt has always been a class act, but no matter what he does someone will question his move in this one.

I've seen this before, make an agreement and something changes after the agreement is made, I've been in a similar situation, but I didn't make anything close to what Kuch made, I asked the guy what he thought was fair, it was reasonable so we went with that. I've even had some kids that their dad said the experience was enough, they didn't need to be paid, kid was missing school or something, the same kid caddied for me three years straight, usually gave him dozens of golf balls and gloves or a club or two, the last year his dad said it was ok if I gave him a little money, got the company the helped me with equipment to send the kid a driver, and I'm a nobody

This pretty much sums it up. The Ike of golf has a temper tantrum, but how much a caddie was paid 3.5 months ago is what is being talked about. Rich people problems!

The apology and payment is a big step toward ending a saga that Kuchar said had played out mostly on social media. Even so, it was getting more attention from players on the range than Sergio Garcia damaging five greens and getting disqualified in Saudi Arabia

This site is amazing. They agreed to a price. He paid it, but yet we thank he should get more? Doesn’t matter how much he makes or is worth. Guy stated it was fair. Media doing what media does. Create drama

That amount is for regular caddies, not fill ins. I had a friend who used to caddie at the Hawaiian open each year we were stationed in Hawaii. He just offered his services and usually got picked up. He would make $500 for the week and that included practice rounds. He knew what he would make going in Just like Kucher's fill in.

When you pay someone the agreed upon price, how is that stiffing them? If you win and choose to pay more, fine, but I don't see the contractual issue here.
