    Can't find fuel pump: 1989 40 HP E40ELCEC

I think my fuel pump is not working so bought a rebuild kit. I cannot find the fuel pump. Is it built into the VRO pump? The parts schematic online does not give a poc. with the fuel pump location withing the context of the engine. Just a blown up pic of the pump and its parts.

I think you have to click the pic to make it upright.

Please, first get a OEM service manual for your motor. You may be able to download one from the sticky at the top of this page.

It is circled in yellow. You indeed have a VRO system, look under the yellow plastic plug which is used to plug the oil line to the motor.

Yes the fuel and oil are mixed into the pump as a unit. It is driven by crank case pulses.

Ugh. I wasn't planning on taking that out. All the video had the fuel pump easily accessible. This seems more complicated now.

your VRO gets the oil and fuel and mixes them do you premix? or do you have a separate oil reservoir?....if you do not have an oil reservoir then you have to pre mix...in which case these pumps can be easily replaced by a diaphragms one which is a lot cheaper if buying/repairing the old one is too costly.....I did it on my Johnson and I am not a Tech.

My engine is starved for fuel. So I should replace the VRO pump instead of thinking OI need to rebuild the fuel pump.

Why don't you describe what your motor is doing, that way we might be able to help.

Turns over but seems like it’s not getting fuel. Changes the fuel line with the bulb. I sprayed carb cleaner into the carburetor and that kept it running for a little but definitely fuel starved. Fuel pump is the next thing I thought of. Bought a fuel pump rebuid
but couldn’t find the fuel pump only vro pump which appears takes the place of the fuel pump with separate oil tank that mixes gas and oil.

Do not spray carb cleaner to keep motor running, mix gas and oil in a spray bottle and use that. With carb cleaner your running the motor without lubrication. So you changed the fuel primer bulb? Did you use the BRP primer bulb? Does the primer bulb stay hard when the motor will not keep running? Is this a new motor for you or have you had it running good and then this started? If you pump the bulb up hard, it should fill the carb with fuel and the motor should start and run. If the fuel pump side of the VRO is bad the motor should quit running when the fuel in the carb is used up, pumping the primer bulb should keep it running indicating the pump is bad.

It ran fine for years. Happened at the end of the season. Replaced the bulb. The bulb is hard and engine will rig for maybe 5 seconds then stop. This happens over and over. I only used the carb cleaner once and sprayed only a little bit. I don’t have to reprime bulb after it runs for a short period.

Well, does pumping the primer bulb keep it running?
