1997 Ranger 461 VS Jackplate size???

I have a 97 461 VS that doesn't currently have a jack plate and thinking about adding one to it to help with hole shot that i'm lacking terribly. Could anyone that has or knows of someone post what size setback I should go with on this rig? I have a 150 EFI Merc on it if that makes a difference at all.

I wouldn’t go over a 6” on that hull, pretty sure that Ranger recommended a 6”.

There is plenty of set back on that boat. Have you looked at your set up.

I had the same rig years ago and a 23" Tempest was the best prop with a very solid hole shot.

6” will wake it up quite a bit. Perfect for that hull

I had this same setup years ago as well. In fact, I had one with a Yamaha motor and one with a Merc 175 EFI. The holeshot was great on both boats albeit the one with the Yamaha had no jackplate but the one with the Merc actually had one of the old Minn Kota jackplates.

    I had a '96 461 w/ a 150 EFI. As mentioned above, slap a 23 Tempest on it and you'll be all set.

Yeah I just feel like it's got a terrible holeshot and I'm only getting max 52-53 mph and I know that boat has more than that in it! Thought maybe a jack plate would take care of both issues.

big boat with a 150 on a hull rated for 175,,,and if it is not set up right(pad to prop/engine running right/propped right/) it will be lacking in performance. Plenty of built in set back.

Ok so after some more in depth looking it turns out I have a 25p Tempest on it and I like this is why i'm not getting any speed out of it. I guess I need to find a 23P Tempest and throw it on the rig and see how that goes.

What RPM is that? Even at 6,000 RPM, that's barely even theoretically possible to achieve with a 23 pitch prop. You'd have to be at 3% slip which is in the "I've never heard of it" realm. Something doesn't add up there...

In any case, even if you've got a higher pitched prop on it, it sure sounds like that 175 has some modifications. 2 guys and full tourney load and half fuel? You should be in the business of setting up boats!

6" plate is all Ranger would recommend and warranty during that era. A 6" plate made a huge difference on that hull.

Seems like I ran a 24 pitch on my 462 with 6" jackplate. Mine ran low 60s with a 150 intruder.

67 mph on a cold morning. I weigh 165lbs, my son is 150lbs. 20 gal of fuel. 10 rods. 12 plano 3700's. Small cooler. Anything else you may need for your formula? 65 easy when warmer. Slowest I have seen it run is 64 and hot as heck out. No mods. This is why I hate posting on here. Doesn't matter what calculations you come up with, that is what it runs. Come fish with me. Will have a blast and could see how this sweet thing runs. Do have friends on here that can vouch if needed.

You made me run home and check........LOL!!!!! I apologize, it's a 25p on it. Some reason you got me thinking because my Triton had a 23p on it with a 150 and would run 60. 25p dude.........sorry man LOL!!!!! Still can come fish with us though.
