What are your RPMs now? Theoretically you should gain 400 RPMs

about 5000.......kinda struggle with a 26 p, and very
seldom do we WOT . thought maybe a 24 would put me in that range.
What prop are you running now?

Yes, you should be running a 24p raker

just don't want to over rev
23 Renegade also 24 Raker or 27 Shooter I have run all of these with good results on my 374V
1990 374V Ranger Still kickin' bass after all these years
You want that engine turning 5500. I used to turn my last fast strike to 5800 all the time, thou for longevity's sake I'd try to keep it around 5500-5600.
You are actually treating it worse, putting strain on it lugging it with too big a prop, and prob also building up carbon. Get the rpms where they should be as that is where the engine is designed to run

first I had a 28p raker ,came with the boat(around 4800 rpm's)...a little slow. so I bought a used 26p raker (I have now 4900 rpm's)) not bad but need to get more rmp's......no jack plate
I've been asking people what the range is on this motor and not one answer. until your answer.
been looking at a power tech 24 p on line .....I might just get it. with a flo torque kit for Johnson.
if you look up rpm's for Johnson motors all's I see is 5000 rpms' for a 175
I was going by this 5000 rmp.....
1992 Johnson 175 HP
J175GLEN Fast Strike
This 175 horsepower Johnson outboard, manufactured in 1992, is a saltwater model. The engine weight is recorded at 370 lbs. This is a 6 cylinder model. The displacement for the pistons is 158. The bore for this outboard is 3.6 inches and the stroke is 2.58 inches. This engine has power steering and a electric-type starter.
Serial Number: EN
RPM Information: 5000
Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped).
Always prop to the upper rpm range loaded normal....
It is not a Salt water motor, the serial number is not EN that is the model number designating the 1992 model year use the decode chart in the stickies above. I don't ever remember you asking here what the operating range is for your motor. The operating range is 4500-5500 RPM with the horsepower rated at 5000 RPM. Prop selection is a trial and error process, hulls respond to different props differently. The motor does not have power steering.
chanmpion.....then why is it writin that way for a salt motor . so 5800 rpms is out of the question?
If it was a salt water motor it would be called an Ocean Runner or Ocean Pro and be painted white. The G in your model number designates special styling. L for 20" (long driveshaft) EN is your model year 92. Your serial number is below your model number. When looking up parts you use your model number unlike Mercury who uses the serial numbers. It's your motor if you want to wind it up to the rev limiter of 6100 that's your prerogative. I can only give you the operating range.
don't think i'l hit 5800 much less 6100....thanks for the info.
I've seen them turn 5800 and last, The guys here will only give you the factory specs......Your mota.....your choice......but the prop you're running now isn't the right one....
