My Lund's tow weight loaded is about 3500lbs or so. While never having issues towing it with a 2008 Tundra 5.7 and 6 speed trans, it took a long time for the shifting to settle in and it seemed it would run excessive rpms longer than I though normal, before settling into gear, with the boat in tow. I put 200k on the truck, and those miles were far from trouble free. I'm in a SuperDuty gasser now and the towing difference is night and day. It could be due to the Ford being a lot more of a truck. It could also be due to technological advancements over the last 10 years. The rpms settle in right away on shift changes and the electronic locking rear differential far superior to a standard posi rearend. I don't know how the current Tundras compare to my 2008. The Tundra is due for an upgrade/overhaul in the near future. I got a sick deal on the SuperDuty, otherwise I probably would have bought another Toyota.

You really can’t compare a 3/4 ton to a 1/2 ton truck. Just wondering if you ever serviced your transmission or had it checked. What you described isn’t the norm. The 3rd Generation Tundras are great. Visit any Toyota Tundra forum and see for yourself.

I really liked my 2007 Tundra and it towed great. I just hated the mileage which was 11-12 towing and 14-15 around town. Sold it for a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel which gets me 17-18 towing, 18 around town and 24-26 by itself on the freeway.

I’m 800+ miles from home right now. I pulled my buddies new Ranger 520L with a V8 Merc mostly interstate here. I used 5th gear after he drove for a while saying my 2018 shifted more than his 2007. I reminded him my 2018 was a 4WD with AT tires vs his old 2007 that was 2WD with street tires. I drove most of the way and used 5th gear. I got the same 11.7 MPG he got in 6th on his tank just to prove to him that it wont shift near as much and get the same MPG. My FIL had an Eco Diesel. That’s the only 1/2 ton truck I know now of that’ll do better at 70 MPH pulling a bass boat that weighs nearly 5000 pounds with a cover on it acting like a big sail with the bed full of a weeks supplies. Sadly his Eco and my BIL’s Eco have been nothing but trouble. My FIL actually got rid of his after it left him stranded several times. My buddy kept his 2007 Tundra about 7 years then got a Ram. He just got Hs second Ram. He has been pleased with his Hemi Rams. We have pulled boats down to lower Florida many times with his Ram. The Tundra and the Hemi Ram get virtually the same MPG pulling at interstate speeds.

I’m not sure how you guys manage to get such poor MPG wit the Tundra unless you are putting big tires on them and or have a VERY heavy foot?

Buy what ya like. My 14 Silverado DID average a couple MPG better than the Tundra. You can bear that out over at Fuelly.com. But, there is no comparing the 55.3 Silverado and the 5.7 Tundra in power. You’ll have to step up to the 6.2 and pay for the more expensive fuel.

n2ratfishin - what are you getting towing the RT188 around ? My 2016 Silverado gets me about 13-14 mpg towing the X19 to Canada keeping it right at 70 mph. Back and forth to work empty I'm at 16 mpg. Thanks

My 2014 GMC SLT crew cab averaged 15 to 16 in mixed and 18 on the Hwy. My 2015 Tundra averages 14.5 mpg in mixed driving and 16 to 17 mpg on the Hwy. I’ll take the reliability and resale over a 1 or 2 mpg difference all day long.

Trans was never serviced and the truck was maintained by Toyota for the entire 200000 miles.

If I’m on the intestate right at 70 I’ll see high 13’s pulling my 18’ RT. If I crank it up to 76 or so It’ll drop to 12. The key to any kind of decent MPG with the Tundra is keeping the rpms under 2,000 and avoiding a heavy foot in town. Back and forth to work I see 14 and some change. I’ll take mine in for it’s 10000 mile service when I get back from Florida. It’ll have 10,400 or so on it by then. The overall average is sitting at 14.5.

I’ve checked this one by hand several times. It’s right on the DIC. My 15 was a MPG or so off. I can only assume the new one is pretty accurate because of the adaptive cruise. My 15 speedometer was a couple mph slow per gps at 75. The 18 is dead on per gps.

My 14 Silverado had 3.08 gears. 76 mph or so didn’t hurt mpg with that kind of gearing out back when I wasn’t pulling anything. When I hooked up the Cougar MPG fell off, I’ve made this same pull with that boat and got the same mpg as the Tundra. I had an 08 Avalanche with 3.73’s before the 14 Silverado. It got the same mpg as my Tundra.

My 14 Silverado averaged 17 overall the 30K miles I owned it. Mine was a 4WD LTZ Plus with the 5.3. Sadly it stayed in the shop all the darn time for recalls and vibration issues.

Both my 15 and my 18 Tundra’s average 14.5 overall. I really can’t badmouth my Chevy truck resale. I’ve had decent luck with that sans the 14 that I kept a year and 30K miles.

I kept my first Tundra two years and 52000 miles and got 5,000 less than I paid for it. BUT, that one was a 2015 Inferno TRD Pro. They still bring insane resale being they were only made one year in that color, and they only made a few thousand that color.

I had one 7 years and it is the best towing vehicle I ever owned. Now gas consumption sucks, but it can pull.

Great truck for towing and stopping. About the only thing it can't pass when towing is a gas station.

Im curious as to what the 2021 model will bring with lots of rumors floating around. If they got 2 more mpg they couldn’t make them as fast as they could sell them!

I had a 2010 F 150 lariat 4x2 crew max with the 5.4 and 3.55 gears. It worked well and bought a 2017 Tundra Platinum 4x2 with the 5.7. This truck tows amazing and tows way better than the ford ever did. Fuel economy is about 1 to 1.5 better than my ford with the same boat. I get 11 to 13 depending on speed towing at 65 mph on the highway it does the best. Bump it up to 70 + and it takes the hit. Average fuel economy on the truck is 15 to 16 normal city & highway gets better. Also stops great better than the ford brake fade ever did!

I have been pulling my Ranger 522SVX with my wife's 2018 Tacoma, with a V6 with no problems on highway or ramps

03 Sequoia with 4.7 and 4 speed auto, no issues with Basscat. Reared ratio is 4.10 helps quite a bit.

Pulled my Ranger now my Phoenix with my Tundra. Pulling is something, stopping is something else. These trucks have Hugh disk breaks on all corners. Great truck no complaints, as others have said MPG is lower than others but does not bother me. One thing to note the style has not changed for several years and some might think its tired. But not to me, I wanted a truck not the space shuttle so it has everything I personally need. Oh and these things look dammed sexy when lifted and decked out.

I hope the 2021 isn't a fuel efficient, great riding, good looking truck! I don't feel like buying a new Tundra! My 2016 only has 11k miles.

    I've got a 04 tundra 4.7 limited.. Pulling my 2000 tr21.

I get around 8mpg at 65mph on highway and 15 around town non towing..

    It's OK

I have a 2016, average mileage is 14/15 mixed city and highway and around 12 pulling my Charger 185. As far as power goes more than enough pulling that boat especially when the tow mode button is engaged.
