    Triton 186 Magnum Questions

Found a Triton 186 magnum for sale locally and was wondering if anyone had one of these boats and if so what are some pros and cons to it? One thing I was reaalycwondering was is this a pad hull tin boat? Also how long of rods fit in the rod locker? I have been looking at RT188 a but this is about half the price? Boats in decent condition and is a 2003 with a 150 HP Merc EFI.

I owned the slightly smaller Triton 176 Magnum and you can be certain that the 186 Magnum is a true pad hull (and fast). As this is a 15-16 year old hull, take a close look at the bottom to be certain that there aren't any major dents to interfere with performance and check all the welds carefully. I don't recall the length of rods that can be stored since I had a smaller boat and I really enjoyed my 176 but wanted a bigger boat when I bought my RT188. One thing to note, if the carpet is in crappy condition these boats are sall aluminum and relatively easy to re-carpet, I did so on my boat and it came out really nice.

I have a SP-185, not sure how similar they are but I have no problems with a 7’6” rod.

May be 1/2 the price, but it's a 15 YO tin with a V6. I'd look at a 5 YO if buying used. Don't think anything over 7' made in 2003.

My 176Mag handled 7 foot rods with ease but back then my biggest was only 7-3 and the rod box was on the left side.

It is a padded hull boat and it will handle rods longer than 7' (although I don't know exactly how long). They are really good boats and they are laid out great - basically there is storage under all of the front deck. They ride good and with the 150 it should be a 60 MPH boat. The only down side I know if is that the rear storage boxes are not that big. Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions.

To clarify - I don't have the rod organizer in my rod locker and I think that allows for longer rods. The rod lockers (one starboard side and one port side) are very large.

I have a 2005 186 mag and i love it! I had a 115 on mine but have since found me a low hr Merc XR6 150 over the winter and im just waiting for a little warmer weather to mount it. I can get 7ft rods in mine. Thats about it though, u could get away with a 7'2 but anything 7'5 would be pushing it. If they dont fit i just strap them to the deck, alot cheaper than me spending the extra money on a new rig just because a rod wont fit. Of course these boats have been out of production since 07 or 08 but i found mine last yr and it was in great shape! Its rides great but it will get you wet in rough water with overspray at times. Im not using my rig on really big water either though. I know of a guy that uses the 197 model on Ky Lake and he says it does great. If its in good condition and i think i saw this boat your talking about on craigslist, it looks like its in good shape. I really like mine!

Thanks for the replies everyone....7 of the 15-20 rods I always carry are over 7’1” so that is a bit concerning. Also has anyone installed a reccessed TM pedal in one of these?

Why dont you take ur rods to where the boat is and see if they will fit if the boat is locally? That would be the best thing i would do just to see if they will fit.

I have a 2006 v186 magnum. I don’t have rod tubes in my rod locker and it will take a 7’ 6” rods easy. I installed a trolling tray in mine about seven years ago.

I have 2003 with a 130 Honda. It's a good riding pad bottom boat. It will handle 8 ft flipping sticks in either rod box. Unfortunately mines for sale. They are good fishing boats.

RE: recessed foot pedal - Yes - well I had it done. You have to cut through a cross member / deck support and thus you will need to reinforce the front deck. If you will pm me your e-mail address I will send you some photos of mine.

The 176Mag has a 26 or 27 gallon tank, a full tank lasted forever and was located under the rear deck. I expect the 186 to be the same, am sure someone will come along to confirm soon.

26or 27 gallon is correct. The tank is under the rear deck. There is storage under the seats on my v186

You might need the fold away tongue. I had a 24’ garage and my 176 fit without a folding tongue but there wasn’t a lot of excess. I wish I sill had my 176/186 brochure.

I have the 176m and the fuel tank is to big in my opinion. 27 gal's will last you for ever. The problem is you have very little room for batteries and I can't get my arm between the back of the tank and the transom to clean my bildge pump. Other than that I have had mine for 5 years and love it.
