Level the engine, pump the primer bulb until firm, hold in the key to choke for a ten count and fire. I hope this helps, hopefully I remembered correctly but worked like a charm for me.
This is the exact procedure my ‘90 Mariner Mag 2 needed. If I did exactly as you wrote she was purrrrrfect, if not, it was a crap shoot. I never let my dad start the boat cause he wouldn’t hold the key down long enough and he’d just let it crank over. Wait 15 min and start over...again perfect. Loved that boat/motor. It taught me how to drive and take care of a boat when I was in my early-mid teens.

The only thing left out is give it a little throttle on start up. If a Merc does not start quickly you need to have it Tuned correctly.

All XR motors are 150 HP, not 115 HP.

The EPA mandate that all boat motors must pass the 3 Star rating took effect 2006. The XR6 along with several other carburetor motors ceased production because they could not pass the emission test. Boat motor manufacturers had a few years notice to clean up their motor emissions so this speed up the process of trying to figure out direct injection motors. Ficht came along late 90's 97-98? and Opti-Max around 02? and and HPDI was the last to pass the 3 star rating with their introduction of HPDI around 03?. Currently production of new carburetor boat motors are a thing of the past due to emissions.

EPA did away with the 2.5 280hp EFI, the 3.0L 280hp Pro XB EFI & the 300x hp EFI also.

Correct EFI and carburetor motors could not pass emission test, hence the birth of direct injection...Ficht, Opti-Max and HPDI.

Correction: I said 280 Pro XB should be 250hp PRO XB.

2000, xr6 still going strong here.
Startron is all I've ever used in regular gas. Cranks easily when level.

This is what I do with my 2003 125 2x2. Took me awhile to figure her out. I also give her just a little bit of throttle...just before I hit the key I call her a few naughty names then talk dirty to her! Usually get a good start but have to stay with it for a bit. Push in the key....lil throttle up or down.

Mine was bullet proof and I should have never gotten rid of it. Just didn't like the boat it was on. A fuel injected 2 stroke with no way for the ECM to know that a cylinder was running lean due to clogged fuel injectors was about the dumbest idea known in the internal combustion engine history.

+1... my '90 Black Max 175 was a nightmare to cold start when I first got it. After having motor tuned up, it cranks quickly first try every time.

Anyone notice how all the old carb motors(proV/vmax, faststrike/intruder, mag/xr) lasted for decades and 1k hrs with very little trouble?

I have a '04 and I think that was the last production. Like some others, it's been a good one and runs like a striped ape.

Mine is a 96 and still runs great. Paint still not broken. As for using gas, that is another story.
