After seeing your images, I have decided to hold on to my 3DSS for a while. I do have the 3-n-1 at the Bow....Thanks

Yes, the range on the SS3D is much better than AI, but this scroll speed?!?!

John, does Ping setting have anything to do with scroll speed? I was getting poor HDI DI images on my trolling motor. I went from a 19 Ping setting to a 14 setting and the images got much, much better.

    Just wondering

Not an option on DS Donnie, as far as I know. Open to correction.

Everyone keeps saying they are going to wait for the AI 3D transducer? Is that coming out after the LiveSight transducer?

You seem to be pretty passionate on this topic. For me it is interesting, but I am not sure I understand why it is such a big deal. I can see more information on the same screen with more history and detail with the slower scroll speed of the SS3D. While each thing is smaller, I can always zoom into an area if something catches my eye. I couldn't find that ping changed this scroll speed, but maybe I missed it.

Normally I have my screen split anyway, with sidescan on the bottom. If only half or less of my screen is dedicated to sidescan, I would want all the history and detail in that space as possible, right?

    What am I missing?

The StructureScan 3D transducer is more advanced than the AI transducer so I strongly doubt we will see an AI SS3D transducer. The AI transducer is an upgraded TotalScan or LSS-2 transducer where some of the technology from the SS3D transducer is added.

So then why on the post comparison do the 800ai images look course and grainy while the 3d look smooth. Why do you see fish better with the 3d. Explain please.

Seeing all these pictures make me very satisfied with my Gen3 HDS12 and 3D transducer. Last update I installed was the one in early 2018 when fish reveal and 3d updates were released and that is where it’s going to stay. Learning to tweak your adjustments for different days and different pallets make a huge impact on image quality.

I’m pumped to try the AI with my Carbon 12, looks significantly better than the LSS2 I currently have. Dang ice...

I will stick to AI for structure / cover, but I certainly will be spending some more time looking for fish with the SS3D after seeing some of these posts here.

Guess I was too focused on structure / cover as a cartographer.

My point is that when one is out looking at the lake in a macro sense, searching for cover, edges, and attempting to understand structure, bottom composition, transitions, and the "highways" fish use to travel, a little more boat speed is useful, if not required. The 3-1 AI seems to be an improved and useful tool for this endeavor.

But when actually fishing, the boat moves so much slower; a realistic fishing speed is 0.3-0.8 mph. I'd prefer to be able to see the details. The slower scroll speed is an asset, or at least it will not make a difference. If it provides more details, so much the better. For this, the SS3D seems to shine.

While the comparisons earlier in this thread are very worthy, the fact is I use side imaging two different ways. One, while driving the boat at 2.5-5 mph, searching. The other, while fishing and moving the boat very slowly, refining what I already know or suspect.

It occurs to me that each of these transducers have their strengths. If the SS3D is producing compressed images in your opinion, give it a fair chance and slow the boat down to match the slow scroll speed.
