    Remove Gel Coat from Motor

Hello all. Been on this forum tons over the years as many questions have been answered from those on this site!
I am looking at recarpeting and wet sanding my 92 Nitro 190 DC. Not a problem. Unfortunately I have had to do this process with another boat. One thing I didn't need to do was mess with the paint on the motor.
I'll try and attach some pics to show what I'm talking about but the clear coat on the motor seems to be bubbling and peeling. The lower unit needs to be repainted all together but the cowling is still in good shape minus the clear coat. How do I remove that coat without effecting the paint? I don't want to start throwing stripper or thinner up there without some suggestions first.

    Thanks again

It appears someone sprayed cleared over the cowling/pans and decals. It all needs to be removed to prime and repaint. The mid and lower unit, can’t really tell but if it were mine I’d stip to bare metal and go from there with primer and paint.

What should I use to strip it? Don't want to damage the plastic with something too aggressive

If you take it down to bare metal, make sure to use the zinc chromate for the metal. Bull Dog adhesion for the cowling and any plastic parts. Bull Dog will flex and is same product used for car bumpers. Without it the paint/clear cannot flex and cracks will develop. You can get a match paint from a ppg paint distributor. They can scan the existing paint as long as it is on a flat surface. I did my johnson 150 gt years ago and it held up good.

I took mine to paint shop locally that does a lot of custom painting for motorcycle tanks, fenders, etc. and automotive paint jobs. They removed the stickers/decals, took it down, and removed the raised inserts below the decals.

Just sand it down. If you scar the material in the process, you can always use filler to fix those. Prime it, sand the primer smooth with 1000-1500 grit then paint it

Thanks for all the info! Just barely got the boat back as I found a crack on the lower unit. I'll have to sand it down and start over.
Is the a specific brand of paint that I should use with the Bulldog adhesion? Don't want to walk into my local boat shop and get some some crazy expensive paint if I don't need it.
