    This was a bargain!

My local paper does a "look back" section where they go back to the news on a particular day and year. This was in that section:

Jan. 19, 1962—Bear Bryant’s coaching contract at Bama has just been extended by a decade. Coach Bryant will make $18,000 a year.

Swede Lee was the football coach at my HS in 73-75. His hiring was a bit of a controversy locally, and state wide, because his deal included a $20,000 salary, a rent-free house, and a car. We won 3 state championships, and lost only two games (to crosstown rival Texas High) in those 3 years. Swede's greatest accomplishment was ending the racial diviseness among players and students that was prevalent at the time. He was best friends with my father in HS back in the 50s. My wife sees him monthly at the Alzheimer's Alliance Respite Center. He comes and tells stories to the residences. Still a great and caring man even today.
And Yes, he was a bargain for a coach at the time.

That's 149K a year adjusted for inflation, or about what our little local University coach earns. The last one here had a couple of winning seasons after years of coaches losing seasons and the young guy is gone! Indeed that was a bargain and then some for Alabama.

Houndstooth. Billion dollar industry for an "ugly" pattern. Hell, even Chevy made car seats with this pattern.

They didn't have the big TV contracts or shoe/apparel company money. If you wanted to see your team play you either had to go to the game or live where the game was broadcast locally. It would interesting to compare the total revenue then vs. today.

This may explain a large portion of the increase. You can draw a parallel for almost anything where "government money" has been used to make things "fair."

    THIS^^^ was exactly the cause.

Yep ... $95,000 is what we are currently facing. That's the cost for in-state tuition, room/board, books, etc. for four years.
Can't tell you how ridiculous we find it. Our system should encourage, embrace and empower a strong post-secondary education.
Instead, it's become yet another financial drain on the middle class. $25k per year for a proper education ... fudging nuts.

Yep, things never get less expensive when you throw govt. dollars at it, price goes up and the burden gets sent to the taxpayers.

Imagine if they pit the HS coach salary and Stadium costs into creating better education? Some of these states could rise above the bottom third in Education.
College costs are out of hand, kids graduating with 60-100k in debt.

What would you all propose to lower the cost of college?

You want a license to cut hair? Today that school is going to cost you what a degree would have back in the 60's. Who REGULATES licensure and certifications?

I don't want to add the cost for licensure just to sell Medicare Supplement Insurance.

First, college costs will never go down from where they are now.

Second, state government regulates which careers require a license and the cost of those licenses. Many states also have licensure boards, comprised of influential people in that career who set requirements and standards for applying for a license to practice that career. These boards apply a lot of political pressure on legislatures to adopt policies that restrict entry into their career.
